In the early 90's, Gillian
Welch, born in Manhattan and raised in Los Angeles, attended the Berklee School
of Music in Boston where she began performing her own material, as well as
traditional country and bluegrass songs, as part of a duo with fellow student
David Rawlings.
After college, Gillian first
appeared on the folk scene as a singer/songwriter armed with a voice and
sensibility far beyond her years, earning widespread acclaim for her deft,
evocative resurrection of the musical styles most commonly associated with
rural Appalachia of the early 20th century.
On June 28th, 2011, the duo
released the latest effort The Harrow & The Harvest to a large amount of critical acclaim and embarked on
a relentless tour in support of the album.
"Gill and Daves new
record, is the product of two people who have become so entwined in one another
that the songs and the singing and the playing on this record seems to exude
form a single voice. This is the sound of two voices, locked in unison, locked
in harmony. The sound of two people playing live, with no overdubs, and very
few takes." - Colin Meloy of The Decemberists
