Debuting in 2019-2020, ¡José! is New Ballet Ensemble and School's newest touring show based on the life and work of the great modern dance master, José Limón. This performance presents young audiences with a program that illuminates a variety of dance, music, and art genres from this era in history, such as Flamenco, Spanish guitar, and modern art, that inspired José Limón on his journey to become one of the most influential modern dance choreographers of his time.
Born in Mexico in 1908, Limón immigrated with his parents to the United States as a young boy during the Mexican Civil War, and his childhood experiences informed his development as a dancer and choreographer. Remembered today for the Limón technique, this celebrated artist founded the Limón Dance Company in the 1940s, and it remains one of America’s premiere dance organizations.
