Warren Wolf finishes the Jazz in the Box series with a show by a remarkable “multi-instrumentalist.” Wolf started in on vibraphone/marimba, piano, and drums at age 3 and never stopped. Originally trained in classical music, the lure of jazz pulled him from teaching into performing, leading him around the world with six different groups. Just finishing his 4th CD, Wolf will bring us an outstanding show from one of today’s leading vibraphonists.
After each performance, join us for Cocktails & Conversation in the main lobby. This is an opportunity to visit with other concert goers and when available, the Jazz in the Box artists. Drinks will be available for purchase at the lobby bar.
More about Warren Wolf
Warren Wolf is a multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore. He began training on the vibraphone/marimba, drums, and piano at the age of three. His father, Warren Wolf Sr., guided Warren’s deep dive into all genres of music.
Warren attended Peabody Preparatory for eight years, where he studied classical music with former Baltimore Symphony Orchestra member Leo LePage. He attended high school at the Baltimore School for the Arts and, after graduating in June 1997, he headed north and enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
During his time at Berklee, Warren began to explore jazz and studied with Carribean jazz vibraphonist Dave Samuels and vibist Ed Saindon. One of the highlights of his stay in Boston was co-leading a quintet with Boston-based trumpeter Jason Palmer at the historic jazz club Wally's Cafe. Warren was also the house drummer at Wally’s, performing every Friday and Saturday.
After graduating from Berklee in May 2001, Warren became an active musician on the local Boston scene, and in September 2003 he became an instructor at Berklee College of Music.
After two years of teaching, he headed back to Baltimore to become a full-time performing musician.
Since leaving Boston, Warren has been performing, recording, and touring with the Rachael Price Group, and he is also the drummer of choice for alto saxophonist Tia Fuller, who frequently tours with internationally renowned pop star Beyonce Knowles. Warren is a member of the Donal Fox Group, which includes bassist John Lockwood and drummers Dafnis Preito and Terri Lyne Carrington. He also tours and performs with Bobby Watson’s Live and Learn Sextet, Karriem Riggins’ Virtuoso Experience, and Christian McBride & Inside Straight. Warren has traveled the world with these groups, performing throughout the United States, South America, Canada, Italy, Spain, Scotland, Greece, Singapore, Thailand, and Jarkarta and in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, London, Bangkok, Tokyo, Paris, Moscow, and more.
Warren’s first two records were on the M&I label, which is based in Japan. The first record is titled Incredible Jazz Vibes and features Mulgrew Miller on piano, Vicente Archer on bass, and Kendrick Scott on drums. The second record, Black Wolf, features Mulgrew Miller on piano, Rodney Whitaker on bass, and Jeff “Tain” Watts on drums. Warren self-produced a CD titled RAW on which he performs on both the vibraphone and drums. That recording features Darren Barrett on trumpet, Walter Smith on tenor saxophone, Jason Palmer on trumpet, Plume on alto saxophone, Kris Funn on bass, Peter Slavov also on bass, Lawrence Fields on piano/Fender Rhodes, and Charles “Dogg” Haynes on drums. On his fourth recording, titled Warren “Chano Pozo” Wolf, Warren performs on the vibraphone, drums/Fender Rhodes, and piano. It features Tim Green on alto saxophone, Lawrence Fields on piano/Fender Rhodes, John Lamkin on drums, Dana Hawkins also on drums, Kris Funn on bass, Louis Cato on electric bass, Delandria Mills on flute, and Tabreeca Woodside and Integriti Reeves on vocals. Warren recently signed to the Mack Ave recording label, through which he will release a record in the near future.
